Although Canada has hosted the Olympics two times before (Montreal in 1976, Calgary in 1988), this is the first one that I’ve been old enough to appreciate how patriotic our country is. It completely awes me to watch the prelude to the opening ceremony, showing all the people decked out in red & white, the national anthem, the stories… watching it – just thinking about it – gives me shivers.
And what I didn’t know, was that we’re (I think) the only country to have hosted the Olympics more than once and NEVER received a gold medal! I have faith this year… this’ll be the year we get it.
On an unbelievably sad note, how incredibly sad about the death of Nodar Kumaritashvili, the Georgian luger. A local TV station I was watching, covering the Olympics, actually showed the crash. It’s frightening and so disturbing to have seen that. And how devastating that not only to have had this happen at all, but to happen the morning of the opening ceremony. So sad… However, I won’t dwell too much on that.
It’s now 6pm Vancouver time (9pm here), the opening ceremony begins! VERY nice touch with the snowboarder through the rings. Nikki Yanofsky did a great job with O Canada. I remember a friend not from Canada commenting to me how pretty our national anthem is. 🙂 Nice welcoming piece with the Aboriginals. Or as my friend Jared tweeted: The four boners of Canada being raised at the #winterolympics LOL.
Annnnd the march of the athletes. This’ll take a couple hours I’m sure! Well. I shall return after the March of the Athletes. Not really much to comment on while they walk…. Alright, I was wrong. I’m back.
Aww poor Cayman Islands… 1 whole athlete. Maybe he/she doubles as an offshore banker too. So many people in the China group. Kinda like how the world population pans out too. I think a girl in the Czech group was trying to take a picture with her camera lens cap still on! That’ll be a sorely disappointed athlete later… Other than Canada, I think Georgia is the other country that everyone is watching. LOL!! The 1 guy from Jamaica, for skating I think? He looks like he’s already started partying!
Watching CTV, the commentator makes the comment “not expected to win any medals” for some of the countries… Harsh. Who’re they to say? Just because they haven’t in the past? If that were the case, WE’D have “not expected to win any gold medals” !
I just realized, is that SNOW they’re all walking on? I thought it was just a white floor before until they did the closeups… They didn’t have enough snow for the hills, but figured if they’re trucking in snow, they may as well get some more to fill the stadium! Why not? And funny to see the dancing people in white on the sidelines. They’re all just dancing to their own tune, where, if you think back to the Beijing Olympics, all the sideline people 1. all looked very alike, 2. were all standing pretty much shoulder-to-shoulder, and 3. moved at the same time, with the same movements. Huh. That’s interesting the IOC isn’t reprimanding the Russian Federation athletes for testing positive for substances until after Vancouver.
LOL!! There’s one of the sideline dancers… a guy with REALLY bad coordination & rhythm! He was onscreen during the cutaway from the U.S. team to Joe Biden… he was just flailing like a crazy man! And I missed it, but another friend – Jason – noted: kazahkstan… as mentioned by Brian Williams “the home of Borat” … awesome!
AND there’s Canada finally. As I said earlier, I am so in awe at the patriotism of Canada. It’s amazing to watch all those people cheering for our athletes. Wow, almost done and it’s been less than an hour of people walking. I thought it’d be longer than that. (That’s what she said.)
Oh God, I can’t stand Nelly Furtado. I was just going to say,she sounds like she’s lip-syncing when the duet came in and Bryan Adams didn’t have his mic to him! HAH. They ARE lip syncing!
Time check: 10:30 here. TV Guide info shows 3.5 hrs left. Jeebus.
COOOOOOL… I like the northern lights, and outward rings effect. WOAH… moving LED bear puppet. K, this whole segment is REALLY cool… (hah, that lady just ran right into the water). Oh, SHUT the F up! WHALES spouting!? FLYING PEOPLE!?! “Influenced by jazz and rock” … and the devil in a canoe with a violin? OH DUDE… is he supposed to be synced up to that shadow on the moon?? SO OFF! The fiddling was pretty cool though. I also like the rock vibe they’re giving it… because tap’s not necessarily known to be the hippest and coolest dance ever, but they’re making it awesome with the young vibe! That and the flaming shoes.
I actually liked that new-and-improved “I am Canadian” kinda slampoetry! Better than the stupid Molson Canadian one.
Alrighty. I made it 2 hours in and I’m tired. That’s all for now. 🙂
Came back just to say: Wow guys. Torch fail! At the most important part! So embarassing. And how far away is the outside flame that they’re driving Gretzky to?! And WTF is that made of?? Aluminum foil!? The hesitation of the flame kicking in was a bit nervewracking..
