I finished the first two books in this series by Sara Shepard and am intrigued enough to keep reading a few more. You know the saying “don’t judge a book by its cover”? I don’t judge a book by its cover but it definitely is what pulls me in initially. Little did I know what a big hit the TV series would end up being, and I’ve resisted watching it because I wanted to at least read a few from the book series first. (As a personal rule of thumb, I always try to read the book before seeing the movie/tv show)
The series follows a group of 4 girls who all have their own secrets (as many teenagers do). A friend who had gone missing years ago seems to be coming back haunting – and taunting – them. The story and plot is definitely more interesting than the character development. I found myself not really paying attention to who was who, all these names being thrown around, all these characters with their nuances that we have to keep track of. Almost like a petty melodramatic version of Mean Girls. Perhaps I’ve outgrown young adult (YA) books, but I do enjoy some YA novels that are well written. That being said, I think I’ve read enough into the series to get the gist of the characters and plot to now start watching the TV show. I was skeptical about it but it seems to be doing quite well. Similar to Gossip Girl, I actually read a bunch of the books before there was even talk of making it into a show, and now I love the show and had stopped reading the books.

Have any of you read the books/watched the show? Thoughts on it?
