Oh, I had SO many pictures to choose from for this week’s Daily Post Photo Challenge theme of Sky. I often take pictures of the sky because of a nice sunset, incoming storm or something interesting and artistic-looking. However, as you know from past posts of mine, I am a bit of a storm chaser. I love pictures of lightning. My old point-and-shoot camera wasn’t fast enough to get any shots so I often just took video that I screen-captured later. Got some great fantastic shots, but not the same as a good high-quality photo.
I had really high hopes when I got my DSLR camera, but after a couple of storms went by and I realized that perhaps my Canon Rebel still wasn’t quite fast enough. I looked online and saw that many people who take pictures of lightning have a tripod and special equipment that’s either triggered by the lightning, or that it takes a few continuous shots at once.
Be that as it may, when a lightning storm came through last night, I took out my old camera to capture some video, in which I did get some great shots – but when that memory card was full, and I was transferring it onto my computer, I didn’t want to miss out any of the other photo ops so I decided to give my DSLR camera another try.
After a lot of patience and a steady hand I could hardly believe it that I actually captured my first proper lightning photography!! With NO special equipment and not even a tripod! I’m so excited that it CAN be done without all the accessories… and I was literally jumping up and down because taking a photo of lightning was a major goal I wanted to do one day. I was so tempted to stay out there longer last night but my arm was getting tired 😉
