215/365: Pottermore

For those fellow Harry Potter fans, you will have heard about the website Pottermore, launched by J.K. Rowling back in June. At the time, there was simply the teaser to submit your email when the site became open for use. Due to the high demand of everyone wanting to register their email, the site was bogged down and overloaded for much of the morning/afternoon. After quite a few stalled registrations, I finally got through late morning.

Starting July 31st (which the fans will know is the birthday of Harry Potter and J.K. Rowling), the site started giving fans the chance for early access to the site before the October launch. Each day for that week, a clue about each book would be revealed at varying times throughout the day. The first 3 days (about the first 3 books) were to be more difficult, while the clue/book/day 4-7 would be considerably easier. Once people figured out the clue, they have to enter the answer to the end of a URL and would take them to a page where they have to find the magic quill. Once the number of registrations had been reached for the day, it was then closed from any more sign-ups. Each of the past 3 days, I’ve seen on Twitter the message that registration has closed for that day, even before Canada was really awake!

Today however, I decided to check later in the day and saw that Clue #4 was revealed: How many students take part in the Triwizard Tournament during Harry’s fourth year? Multiply this number by 28. This was easy! 4 students x 28 = 112. I saw on Twitter some people asking how many students it was.. c’mon. If you’re a fan of the books OR the movie, you’d know it was 4! Anyway, so I put in 112 to the end of http://quill.pottermore.com and it took me to the Sony site. Really confused, but I clicked around looking for said “magic quill” but didn’t find anything. I reloaded the page, and still nothing. I went to Twitter to see if any had figured out where on the page it was, leaving the Sony page on in the background. After a couple minutes, I clicked back over and realized the main page had “magically” turned into a Pottermore page! So very accidentally I discovered how to find the quill – just wait it out!

What’s interesting (and for the purpose of keeping children safe on the internet) is that when you register, you get a choice of 5 predetermined usernames. I selected CloakSeeker185. Looking forward to beta testing the site once I get my owl letting me know that I’m able to log in!

  1. looks so awesome!! I wish I could try, but of COURSE this has to be the week that I’m working full time during the day and don’t have access to the ‘net at work. *sigh*

  2. Yay! Congrats! I have tomorrow off so I’m definitely trying then!

  3. Very cool- Congrats! That trivia question would not have been easy for me to answer but I’ve only seen the movies. Looking forward to hearing more about the site!

  4. Wow, sounds fun. I will check it out. Thanks :)
