This afternoon was the book launch party for Megan Crewe’s book The Way We Fall at Bakka-Phoenix bookstore in downtown Toronto. I actually picked it up a few days beforehand and started reading it on the way there – only about 40 pages in but SO hooked already!
I met up with Wendy (A Cupcake and a Latte), Christa (Hooked on Books) and Evie (Bookish) first and headed to the book launch a few minutes early. There were little goodies (pen, magnet, bookmark and.. hand sanitizer!) plus some refreshments downstairs. At 3pm, Megan spoke to the growing crowd as she talked about her inspiration for writing a book about a virus, when her previous book was about ghosts. “Well, one book was about dead people… this one has a lot of people that die!” (Me, in the crowd: “spoiler alert!” :P)
She spoke about how she stayed up late reading another book that had a contagion storyline, and she dreamt about it that night. Thinking back to other books that really scared her, it was Stephen King’s The Stand that unnerved her, also about a virus that spreads through the land. So while others may go overboard with washing hands, using hand sanitizer… Megan decides to write a book with her own contagion story!
After speaking for several minutes, Megan read an excerpt from The Way We Fall and then proceeded to sign her books for all the attendees. Wendy and I purchased her first book, Give Up the Ghost, and got that signed as well!
It was around this time that we also met up with Audrey (Holes in My Brain) – who we actually were sitting next to beforehand and didn’t realize right away!, Sara (Geek Girl’s Book Blog), Angel (Mermaid Visions) and Brenna (Ever After Esther). After we all got our books signed, we went back downstairs for some refreshments and sat around chatting books for another 30-45 minutes (while getting some bemused looks from the other attendees at the circle of girls gabbing excitedly about books in the basement)
What a great book launch party with a fantastic turn out! If you haven’t picked up your own copy of The Way We Fall, what are you waiting for?? (Just be forewarned: you’ll be wary of everyone around you that”ll be coughing & sneezing.)
