Last night at Hotel Ocho in Toronto’s Chinatown area, Leah Bobet held her “Big Fat Book Wedding” party to launch her debut novel Above. I was initially, and immediately, drawn to the book for the Toronto skyline on the cover because this city doesn’t get enough love in books (more lately than before though)!
I met up with Wendy (A Cupcake and a Latte) and Sara (Geek Girl’s Book Blog) beforehand for some Pho dinner beforehand. Christa (Hooked on Books) was walking by and saw us through the window, and joined us as we were wrapping up. Got to the location of the party, and wasn’t quite sure if it was the right place until a guy behind us was also looking for the same party. Once inside, we met up with Evie (Bookish) and Bonnie (Words at Home), grabbed a drink and claimed a spot for our stuff on one of the couches. I commented how I was impressed at the turnout right at 8pm. Usually when an invite says 8pm, people don’t ACTUALLY show up on time! Guess bookish people are also punctual people. I’m in good company. 🙂
There were so many amazing people at the launch party that we met and chatted with last night. Spent a lovely time chatting with Joanne Levy (author of upcoming book Small Medium at Large) and Lena Coakley (author of Witchlanders) all evening. Had a slightly embarrassing moment when I introduced myself to Leah Bobet and didn’t realize it was THE Leah Bobet till 3 seconds into the convo (Damn you teeny-tiny Twitter profile pics! Also? Leah is really tall!)
About an hour into the party, Leah said hello to everyone, did some thanks to important people and then read a passage from Above.
After the reading, Leah sat down to sign some books! Lindsay (Me on Books) had mailed me her copy of Above the other week, and it thankfully arrived on Monday – just in time for me to bring it to the launch party and have Leah sign it for her. 🙂 I met Nicole from Scholastic while in line and marveled at Leah’s gorgeous, inky, signing pen and her beautiful handwriting before we had a little photo op. 🙂
While Leah kept signing books, we went back to chatting and mingling with everyone else that had shown up in that time including Chandra (@indigoteenblog), Jenn (Lost in a Great Book), Jen (Rayment’s Readings Rants and Ramblings) and so many other people. At one point, we saw Lesley Livingston (and met Melanie Fishbane) who was excited to see us there! Had lots of laughs, chats and pics! (Thanks to her “beer friend” – aka the one holding the drink while she hung out and talked with us! :P)
The party was to go till 2am, but us Bloggettes definitely called it a night around 10. A big thank you to Leah and the team of Scholastic Canada for throwing a fantastic event! <3
