I honestly had no idea what to expect, but I knew I had to see it. I mean, c’mon, it’s Harry Potter.
Potted Potter is a parody by Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner – two fantastically hilarious actors – who spoof all seven Harry Potter books in seventy minutes.
My friend and I originally wondered why the show was so early (at 7pm) since usually the shows begin at 8, but upon seeing all the kids in the audience, we figured that was why. With Jeff as the “Potter Expert” and Dan as “the bumbling friend who hasn’t read book 7”, the dynamic duo zip through a re-telling of each book, interspersed with hilarious hijinx. All the scenic elements were different and quirky enough to obviously not infringe on any copyrights, which made it even more ridiculously awesome. Jeff is fantastic playing “Harry”/the straight man to counterpoint Dan’s talented “every other character in the Harry Potter world”/the zany one.
Let me tell you, I have not laughed that hard – with tears coming out of my eyes – in a long time. The show itself is extremely funny. The moments where they break character and laugh at themselves is EVEN FUNNIER. From an all-out Quidditch game to a “mimey” Slytherin kid to a chocolate cake snafu, the laughs just kept on coming. Potted Potter is fun for the kids and equally (well… I’d even say more) fun for the adults! My friend and I tried to remember all the hilarious moments but you definitely can’t pinpoint just one. I feel like all I’ve used to describe this show are synonyms of “funny”, but it really really is.
This production was such a fast-paced good time, the seventy minutes flew right by. If you haven’t seen it yet and are in the Toronto area, you MUST go see this. It’s been extended until March 25th at the Panasonic Theatre. Buy tickets NOW! 😎
