Ah, Moulin Rouge… Baz Luhrmann’s film from 2001 has been my favourite movie since shortly after it came out. Unfortunately it didn’t hit my radar when it was actually in theatres, but when it came out on DVD I was at once entranced by it. I have always loved musicals, and although I have also always loved Paris – I’m sure this movie contributed to my love of this city all the more.
I find that this movie is quite polarizing in its reviews: either people really love it or really hate it. I remember a friend of mine telling me that her parents went to see it and they wanted to walk out of the theatre, though I can’t recall if they actually did or not. Personally, I’ve seen it countless times (I lost count after 40! :P) I think what I love the most about it is the music. I don’t feel like I’m watching the same movie time and time again, but more like I’m just listening to the soundtrack (which I also often do).
Starring the always-gorgeous Nicole Kidman and ever-charming Ewan McGregor, they tell such a beautiful star-crossed love story in this mesmerizing production. With a fantastic supporting cast consisting of John Leguizamo, Jim Broadbent and Richard Roxburgh, this talented cast rounds out the spectacular film with a dose of zany comedy, hijinx and entertainment.
And just when I thought I knew this movie inside-out, I just realized that one of the “Bohemians”, Audrey (center one in pic) was played by David Wenham (who was Faramir in Lord of the Rings!!) Mind = blown.
And as previously mentioned, the soundtrack is phenomenal. From Rufus Wainwright’s Complainte de la Butte to Fat Boy Slim’s Because We Can, Ewan McGregor making us chuckle with his endearing Elephant Love Medley to giving me chills belting out Elton John’s Your Song. I’d say two of my favourites though would be El Tango de Roxanne and Come What May.
Have you seen this movie? What are your favourite movies set in Paris?
