I heard rave reviews about this movie and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Filled to the brim with an all-star cast, it made for an action-packed 2+ hours of superhero entertainment. Marvel generally does a fairly decent job at the big franchises, and this was no exception.
When the world is threatened by the existence and disappearance of a powerful alien energy source, Nick Fury assembles a team of superheroes to defend the Earth. Loki, brother of Thor, comes from another planet and has plans to form an army that will make everyone bow to his whim as he rules the planet. The Avengers learn to work together while trying to stop the destruction of the world around them.
Hands down, Iron Man and The Hulk steal the show. While the other characters have their moments, it’s clearly the witty comedy that Joss Whedon is famous for that shines through in these two characters. As for the rest of the cast, I enjoyed seeing all the famous faces (both the actors and the comic book characters) all together in one movie. I initially liked ScarJo’s Black Widow, being a kickass fighter, but she seemed to lose a bit of her appeal as the movie went along. Personally, I felt like she was getting melodramatic and whiny rather than the tough fighting woman that she opened the movie as.
As for Loki, I get that there had to be a cosmic major crisis to warrant getting a large group of superheroes together to defend the Earth, but I really didn’t care much for that alien storyline. I get it, I get the plot point and purpose of it, but it didn’t appeal to me. I like a good sci-fi movie or show as much as the next person, but in this instance, it was overshadowed by the other storyline. Give me more Avengers any day.
Overall, an extremely enjoyable movie. In the ranks of other past Marvel ones that I enjoyed like the X-Men and Spiderman franchises.
And, if you don’t know by now to stay past the credits for a bonus teaser scene, you can’t call yourself a comic book movie fan 😉
