Since I’m away this weekend, I thought I’d hand over my 2nd Swoon-Worthy Sundays post over to Wendy of A Cupcake and a Latte! I’m really excited to have Wendy guest-posting this week. Many of us know about her love of Magnus and I’ve always been curious as to how she pictured him to look like. Enjoy this week’s swooning!
SWOON-WORTHY SUNDAYS – MAGNUS BANE
When Michele approached me about writing up a Swoon-Worthy Sundays post about Magnus Bane, one of the only book characters I’ve ever really fangirled for, I jumped at the chance to show off how wonderful of a character he really is and perhaps even recruit some new fangirls and/or fanboys
“I was alive when the Dead Sea was just a lake that was feeling a little poorly.”
-City of Ashes
WHO IS MAGNUS BANE?
There’s really only one way I can start off this guest post, so here goes – Magnus Bane is my future Cupcake King (there, I said it!) When that moment comes to take over the world with my cupcake army with the sole desire to fill it with delicious frosting goodness, Magnus will take the throne by my side and rule over all my lovely cupcake subjects. Just think about it; free cupcakes, no taxes, free health care and education, and NO haters (Magnus could simply poof them into oblivion). Sounds nice, right?
Truth be told, though, no one throws a party quite like Magnus Bane. People have tried and have failed to achieve his superior party planning skills. Even so, this 800 year old Immortal, also referred to as the High Warlock of Brooklyn and is the owner of an adorable cat named Chairman Meow, put my world to a grinding halt with his introduction in City of Bones. An absolute party animal (with control mind you), a kick-butt Warlock, and a cutie if I do say so myself, Magnus Bane proved to be one of the only characters in Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments series that I could identify with and understand. With a mysterious past, a flirtatious way of life, and the promise that he always knows more than he’s letting on, is it really a surprise to anyone that I would find Magnus Bane completely irresistible and swoon worthy? Me thinks not.
WHY DO I FIND HIM SO UNDENIABLY SWOON WORTHY?
A deliciously layered piece of cake – that’s roughly how I would go about describing the infamous Magnus Bane. The first thing that caught my eye about his character in City of Bones, and roughly the entire Mortal Instruments series, was his awesome use of sarcasm and his sense of humour. Despite having occurred in, as I would judge, not the most of opportune times and events, Magnus’ two cents have always had the ability to bring a smile to my face and lighten my mood. A day of the “blahs”? A dose of Magnus Bane has always proven to be a guaranteed cure.
“Malachi scowled. “I don’t remember the Clave inviting you into the Glass City, Magnus Bane.”
“They didn’t,” Magnus said. “Your wards are down.”
“Really?” the Consul’s voice dripped sarcasm. “I hadn’t noticed.”
Magnus looked concerned. “That’s terrible. Someone should have told you.” He glanced at Luke. “Tell him the wards are down.”
-City of Glass
“I’ve got a stele we can use. Who wants to do me?”
“A regrettable choice of words,” muttered Magnus.”
-City of Ashes
In addition to his ability to make me laugh and smile, Magnus has proven to lay on the dramatics quite thickly at the most random of times, in most cases in ways that would leave you chilled to the bone in horror and even possibly fear.
“Magnus stood up and went to the window. He pushed the curtain back, letting in just enough light to silhouette his hawklike profile. “Blood,” he said, half to himself. “I had a dream two nights ago. I saw a city all of blood, with towers made of bone, and blood ran in the streets like water.”
-City of Ashes
“This time Magnus answered it, his voice booming through the tiny entryway. “WHO DARES DISTURB MY REST?”
Jace looked almost nervous. “Jace Wayland. Remember? I’m from the Clave.”
-City of Bones
But for the most part my great fascination with Magnus Bane, besides his good looks *wink wink*, has much to do with his mysterious past. Truly, who doesn’t love a good mystery to wrap their minds around? Magnus Bane, in all truth, has been one of the biggest mysteries I’ve encountered. As an 800 year old Immortal it’s fair to assume that Magnus Bane has had quite an epic and perhaps even adventurous and heartbreaking past, one that’s been kept from Cassandra Clare’s readers throughout her many releases. Luckily with the release of Cassandra Clare’s Infernal Devices series (which consists of Clockwork Angel, Clockwork Prince, and the upcoming conclusion Clockwork Princess), readers were given a small glimpse of Magnus’ life during the adventures of Will, Jem, and Tessa some 200 years prior to the events of The Mortal Instruments series. Even so, the Infernal Devices only offers readers a very small and minimal glimpse at how drastically Magnus has changed throughout the years.
“As far as I’m concerned, this is the worst thing that’s happened since I found out why Magnus was banned from Peru.”
-City of Lost Souls
“Black hair and blue eyes are my favorite combination.”
Do I hope that Cassandra Clare will let her readers learn more about Magnus Bane before the conclusion of her Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices series? Yes, definitely! In fact I’m hoping it’ll happen or I’ll be gravely disappointed. Am I still crossing my fingers for a Magnus book cover? Yes, but does it count if I’m crossing my toes as well?!
HOW DO I PICTURE MAGNUS BANE?
Fancasting for any book series is always a fun endeavor to partake in, especially if you already have someone pictured in your mind when you encounter that particularly ground shaking character. For Magnus Bane, personally, it’s been a tough journey. As much as I’ve enjoyed everyone’s fun fancasting for Magnus Bane, I’d have to say only a few of them have hit home with pretty much what I’ve envisioned that he would look like, even so for the upcoming City of Bones movie being shot in Toronto this summer.
Many fancasting choices I’ve seen have pointed into the direction of Miyavi (a Japanese singer I’m actually quite familiar with and a big fan of) and Adam Lambert (another singer I’m gaga for). Miyavi was someone who initially came to mind when I first read Magnus’ character description (someone with a passion for makeup, lots and lots of glitter, rainbows, and anything made of leather) and is one of many fancasting choices I’ve fully supported. Even so, when I came across Adam Lambert’s fancasting choice I was..surprised? As much as I personally think Adam’s fashion sense matches that of Magnus’, I’ll unfortunately never see him as such, though that isn’t to say that I think the idea is absurd.
Overall though, besides the uber onslaught of online fancasting, I think a lot of fanartists have hit the nail on the head with Magnus’ appearance. In addition to the already awesome character profile fanart on the Shadowhunters.com website, I’ve come across some particularly awesome fanartists who have done a wonderful job, and even cosplayers believe it or not!
Speaking of casting and the upcoming City of Bones movie (set to be released August 23rd, 2013), after having fully written this post and having sent it over to Michele, news was released that they finally cast Magnus! I have to admit I was wary about how they would go about casting him. Would I be happy with their choice or would I be disappointed? Luckily they, in my opinion, got Magnus spot on! Meet Godfrey Gao – our drop-dead GORGEOUS Magnus for the upcoming Mortal Instruments film! *swoons, dies, repeats* Jace and Clary? Pfft! It’s all about the High Warlock of Brooklyn
LAST BUT NOT LEAST – WILL I EVER SHARE MAGNUS BANE WITH ANYONE?
No – never – not likely in this lifetime or in any actually (I’m selfish, I know). Though, I would gladly beat down a few glittery vampires for a t-shirt with this on it!
