Now that the 5th season of True Blood is already more than halfway through, I thought I’d feature the gorgeous swoon-worthy cast of this hot HBO show based on the books by Charlaine Harris. (Who, out of all the hotties on the show, is closest to Joe Manganiello – according to the meet & greet I attended). While the racy first episode of this series might have turned some people off (… or on!), this series by Alan Ball definitely runs along that fine line of campy humour, sexiness and paranormal horror.
Speaking of campy, that’s what I love about this show. When you look past the eye candy that seems to be in every direction, there’s an underlying humour among the dialogue and scenarios. It’s like everybody on the show knows it’s pretty far-fetched so rather than try to take themselves seriously with a vampire show, they really ham it up sometimes and poke fun at themselves and the genre.
Whether you’re rooting for Sookie to get together with Bill, Eric or Alcide (lucky gal!), there is an undeniable chemistry among the entire cast. I mean, Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer are married after meeting on the set which one might think it would make for her scenes with the other cast members a bit bizarre, but it seems to translate quite successfully in the series. While many of the nude scenes can seem gratuitous, it’s the nice endearing moments that also make us swoon. Moments where Jason is being dimwittedly sweet, or genuine day-to-day scenes between couples, or Eric in most of season 4.
True Blood seems to have someone for everyone. Whenever it has come up in discussions among friends, after talks of the latest episode it always goes into who our favourites are. There’s quite a diversity among my friends of who they love, but Eric & Alcide are always leading the pack. Me? I’ve always been a fan of the underdog (heh.) so Sam has always been my favourite since season 1. (The episode last week with him was a bit too weird for me though……) Otherwise, I love the characters of Pam and Jessica. Both have such distinct personalities and interesting storylines. Pam’s dry delivery of her one-liner zings are priceless. I also really enjoy the humour that Eric and Jason bring to the show. Eric’s sarcasm (I guess that’s where Pam gets it from!) and Jason’s naivite make for many scene-stealing moments.
Something that completely blew my mind when Alcide first made his debut two years ago, I looked up the actor, Joe Manganiello, on IMDB and discovered he was on How I Met Your Mother… as Brad – Marshall’s college friend who becomes his brunch-buddy! Even seeing the episodes, it’s hard to picture these two guys are the same! (Actually, he’s a very good fit to match with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine now that I’m “researching” all these pics of him for this post!)
It was tempting to make this week’s Swoon-Worthy Sundays post all about the guys, but it really is all about the full cast. While so many other HBO shows are always gratuitously showcasing the female form, it’s a “refreshing” change to see both genders get equal play in this one.
A few discussion questions:
- Are you a “Truebie” (aka True Blood fan)?
- Have you read any of the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris? How do you find it compares?
- Who is your favourite character?
- Who do you think is the hottest man in Bon Temps?
