Summer Read-a-long: August Wrap-Up!

August has come and gone, and we hope you enjoyed the readalong of Michelle Hodkin’s The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer! Jenn (of Lost in a Great Book) and I met up yesterday for our now-monthly brunch to chat about the readalong book. Be sure to swing by her page for her wrap-up post as well! Please be forewarned that there ARE some SPOILERS in this post, as it’s a wrap-up and discussion post about the book.

What Jenn hadn’t realized when she started reading the ebook was just how large of a book it was. That being said, we both found it an easy read that we got through quite quickly. I had mentioned in my review that I posted a few days ago, I felt that the whole scene with Noah’s extravagant mansion seemed very Edward Cullen-esque. It wasn’t until Jenn brought up some other comments she had come across about the whole story overall was very Twilighty that I started really seeing the similarities. We both do agree that it’s not as outlandish as Twilight, and both characters aren’t perfect and have their flaws but the whole aloof mysterious guy stalking out girl, wanting to protect girl, is a familiar premise.

We didn’t want to keep comparing it to our July read of Daughter of Smoke & Bone but being that this has only been our two readalong reads, it was hard not to. While Jenn liked our July read more, I was more taken with this August one. Jenn found Mara’s constant blacking out to get a bit tiresome and preferred the lead character of Karou in Daughter of Smoke & Bone over Mara. We both agreed that the character development was not necessarily as strong but I found it easier and more enjoyable to get into this book than our July pick.  As for the ending of Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, both of us didn’t see it coming, that’s for sure. Often, while details may change, the general idea can be formulaic and you can see a reveal coming from a mile away. The revelation surrounding Jude completely caught us off guard and was really well played throughout the book.

I’ve always said I love a good creepy read, and this one definitely has that factor going for it. I’m excited that the sequel is out this month so I don’t have to wait long to find out what happens.

I’m SO excited for our September read!
Will you be joining us for September’s read of Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake?

We’ve also picked our November book for the readalong, so click on over and see what it will be!
