This is the first-ever recap and Swoon-Worthy Sundays mash-up! Why? Because I wanted to feature the delightful Libba Bray as this week’s feature but realized that everything I would want to write about would also involve recapping yesterday’s event at Indigo Yorkdale – so I thought I’d do both in one post!
It was while we were on our way home that I said to Siobhan (Conversations of a Reading Addict), who should I feature tomorrow? Then realized Libba would be the perfect choice since I know she made many of us want to be BFFs with her (and definitely made Angel @ Mermaid Visions swoon – almost literally!)
So many of us had been planning to attend the event that we unofficially started calling it the Ontario meet-up part 2, a sequel to last Saturday’s festivities. Wendy & I met up at the subway and headed to Indigo @ Yorkdale by 11:30 where we saw Siobhan, Angel, Liz (Midnight Bloom Reads) and Ardo (A.A. Omer) already in line. After sitting and standing around the shelves for a bit, we were let into the event area to grab some seats. Christa (Hooked on Books) and Sara (Geek Girl’s Book Blog) soon joined us, as did Giselle (Book Nerd Canada)! Definitely a second parter reunion 🙂 Sat around for a couple hours (since Libba wasn’t getting there until 2pm) and saw a few more familiar faces (Chandra! Rachel! Rhiannon! Audrey!) while we chatted amongst ourselves about books, books and comic book movies!
Just after 2pm, the fantastic Libba Bray made her way to the front and right away you could tell right away that she had a delightfully vibrant personality. She shared two hilarious stories, both of which I got on video – to share with those who weren’t able to attend!
This first one is Libba telling us about her first book tour for A Great and Terrible Beauty, where it was sponsored by the then-teen magazine YM (remember YM?? 😀 ) and Midol.
This second one is Libba reading one of her first (the first?) story she had ever written, prefaced (and interspersed) with jokes about her deviating attention, winding storylines and literal plot HOLES.
After the stories that left us all in stitches, she took a few questions. Yours truly asked her about the inspiration for Beauty Queens since it’s about a plane crash onto a deserted island – and those who know me and the origin of this blog name – they’ll know that I love Lost. Libba received the idea for Beauty Queens from David Levithan one day when he said to her (and I’m paraphrasing): plane full of beauty queens crashes on a deserted island. What can you do with that? Some other great questions from the audience about the books (including a spoiler, minus the “alert!”) and about writing in general. She left a piece of advice for those that were participating in NaNoWriMo: Just write. Lock away the inner critic and just write. Before she started to sign books, Libba offered a writing prompt for the budding authors: “In the note I didn’t send to you…”
Onto the signing. I had tweeted this before the event started:
Wonder if I can ask @libbabray to sign my copy of Beauty Queens with “get just a lil lost…”? 😛

and Angel said I should totally ask! So I did – and it was awesome. 😎
Sara, Christa & I were talking afterwards and said how Libba and Lesley Livingston need to hang out in the same room at some point. It would be hilariously amazing. The awesomeness that is Libba Bray is why she is my Swoon-Worthy feature this Sunday.
