As previously mentioned, Jenn (Lost in a Great Book) and I weren’t able to meet up at the end of December for our monthly book/brunch due to the holidays and schedules so we met up last night for a brunch-turned-dinner book chat instead! After attempting to check out a relatively newly-opened resto-lounge and being told it would be a 1 hr wait until we got a table, we decided on some delicious Vietnamese food at a much quieter nearby restaurant instead.
Once again – as this is a wrap up discussion post – there is a big ol’ SPOILER WARNING.
Right off the bat, both of us agreed on the lack of connection with Eve. We found her unlikable and nothing about her was particularly appealing. She was self-serving & irrational and other than the one moment of humanity where she was teaching the young boys how to read, there wasn’t any indication other than the author telling us she missed her friends that we got any sense of compassion for anyone else. Jenn and I were both appalled at the radio message incident. I told her how my Goodreads status at that moment was “EVE! YOU IDIOT!!” because seriously. What an idiot. Did we mention that we hated how self-serving she was?
Jenn mentioned how it says a lot about the book when you don’t care much for the protagonist, but feel a lot more connection with all the secondary characters and that’s exactly what it was. I want to find out more about the City of Sand people, Arden, the “lost boys” as it were.. everyone else! And it really wasn’t until Leif sells them out that the story really got interesting. Up until that point, I didn’t have any interest in reading the next installment but given that ending? Yeah, now I want to know what happens!
Overall, we both pretty much had the same thoughts on this book… and both curious about the second book although I think Jenn might be more gung-ho about it than I am..
What did you guys think about it?
Will you join us for our January readalong of Silence?
Check out the other books we have decided on in the coming months and sign up for reminders!
