Oh JT… always a good time when you’re on SNL.
Justin Timberlake became a five-timer host last night on Saturday Night Live and they certainly pulled out all the stops for his opening monologue. Being welcomed into the “Five-Timers Club” by Steve Martin, with cameos from Dan Akroyd (“only a bartender. he’s only hosted once.”), Chevy Chase, Martin Short, Alec Baldwin, Tom Hanks and Candice Bergen it was a star-studded opener, for sure. Yeah, you can say SNL has its ups and downs for hosts but they don’t often call you back to host multiple times unless you were good. And Justin Timberlake is damn good at the comedy.
While I unfortunately didn’t stay up to watch the entire episode last night (sleepiness was calling), I did catch a good majority of it. I think it was the last time he hosted that almost all the sketches were recalls of his past hilarious characters, and that’s great – because it worked. But this time they mixed it up a bit with some new material, as well as having some beloved characters come back in sketches.
I actually can’t believe his first hosting gig was all the way in October 2003! I was trying to think back and count the 5 times he’s hosted and could only think of the 4 before realizing he had initially hosted 10 years ago (with musical guest Jessica Simpson, if that throws you back in time a bit!). I’d say his 2nd hosting stint in December 2006 (still, over 6 years ago already!) was the most memorable, and that’s when we were first introduced to the comedic song pairings of him and Andy Samberg for Dick in a Box. He then returned again in 2009 and brought along Motherlover. With another 2 more hosting gigs and countless surprise cameos, Justin Timberlake quickly made a name for himself from being just another boyband-turned-solo-singer to an actor with great comedic timing.
And what’s a JT hosting stint without the musical act as well. Okay, so I have mixed feelings about his new song. Suit & Tie? A bit of a strange title and premise for a song. What’s next, Coat & Shoes? But it sure is damn catchy. (Although it’s no Sexyback – which is what I thought would have been a great comeback song… he brought sexyback way too early!)
Would have loved to see Neil Patrick Harris as Barney Stinson make a cameo in the Suit & Tie video or something. 😉
