Back in April, on one of the first days that really started to feel like Spring, Andrea (Cozy Up With a Good Read) and I met up after work to head down to Ania Szado’s book launch for her novel Studio Saint Ex. Held at the gorgeous Ben McNally bookstore, I was immediately taken with how beautiful the space is. How have I not known this existed, steps away from the Toronto Eaton Centre!?
The venue was PACKED with Ania’s friends, family and fans – all lining up to purchase one (or two!) copies of her book while enjoying the wine & snacks. Andrea and I chatted with Laurie of Chatelaine Books for a while, who introduced us to Cathy Marie Buchanan, author of The Painted Girls, who was there to support her good friend. Andrea & I didn’t meet them, but apparently Lawrence Hill & Miranda Hill were in attendance as well. That’s one thing I find really lovely in this community. We as bloggers and fans attend various author events and it’s always so amazingly nice to see other authors out to support their fellow writers and friends. I like thinking of it as the book community rather than industry.
Being so crowded in the venue, we grabbed some cheese with our wine and headed up the few steps to the back area where it was much quieter. Little did we know that moments later, the exact spot where we were standing would soon become the stage for Ania’s introduction & speech! Off to the “wings” we scooted (right into the YA section, no less) and trying to look as inconspicuous as we could off to the side.
After Ania spoke briefly about her book and thanking everyone for coming out, she got settled to do some book signing. She was so sweet to really chat with everyone and take pictures! It was while we were waiting in line that we spotted Jenn (Lost in a Great Book).
Huge thanks to Ania, the Penguin Canada team and Ben McNally Books for a lovely book launch party and for introducing me to this gorgeous space 🙂
