Having watched Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby this past week, I was completely enamored by the clothing from that time period. Certainly, the 1920’s fashion has been a star in itself as part of the promotion of this movie, with branded window displays in stores like Holt Renfrew and Brooks Brothers. Holts even has an entire section on the website dedicated to this iconic “Gatsby style“!
In a collaboration with Gatsby set & costume designer (and Luhrmann’s wife) Catherine Martin and world renowned designer Miuccia Prada, the gorgeous gowns of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1920’s novel came to life. These few snapshots from the official movie site doesn’t even begin to showcase all the gorgeous jazz era clothing that was used in this production. One particular scene early on in the movie, the party in the NYC apartment stood out as well. There was one character with a gorgeous turquoise hat with striking eye make-up that matched. The team of Luhrmann and Martin for all their productions are always so visually stunning.
I can already imagine that this will not only bring a resurgence of this style in mainstream fashion but also I wouldn’t be surprised to see a lot of flapper costumes this Halloween!
The movie website fully recognizes that the costumes are just as big of a star as the actors & actresses who don these garments. An entire section is dedicated to the Guide to Style as well as some great interactive features, such as creating your own monogram or your own Gatsby avatar!
