Thank goodness for my friend Katie who saw a (surprising) Groupon offer for BSB lawn tickets for $20. A whole slew of us, including Andrea (Cozy Up With a Good Read), Lindsey from Random House and Shannon from Harper Collins got in on that right away before the offer sold out (which it apparently did fairly quickly). Oh, there was so much excitement leading up to the August 7th concert, months in advance – and then finally as the days were getting closer we were eyeing the weather reports which said it would rain. And not only rain but there would be a severe thunderstorm watch. Great. The same forecast happened for the Bruno Mars concert I had gone to last month and the rain held out, so I was hoping for the same this time.
Andrea, Lindsey, my former colleague Catherine and I met up for some dinner beforehand – partially to ensure we’re able to find each other before going into the melee of the lawn section at the Molson Amphitheatre! Shannon and her two friends would meet us there and they scored AMAZING seats (two “rows” back from the front of the lawn area) which was fantastic! We had missed DJ Pauly D (Yup, THE Jersey Shore Pauly D) but came in during Jesse McCartney’s set. At around 9, the lights shut off and the opening number begins with some very VERY familiar chords. Immediately the entire crowd went wild, jumping up and singing along to The Call.
That pretty much set the stage for the rest of the concert. The concert consisted of 20 songs, with about 5 from their new album In A World Like This. Hit after familiar hit kept playing and everyone went crazy. (My small clip from All I Have To Give) We saw some hilarious signs from people around us.. something like “We know you’re older, but so are we!” or “At least I’m legal now!” Amazingly, the rain held out too except for a few moments of light sprinkling (where we’d pull on our ponchos only to have the rain then stop again. Three times this happened.)
Closing out the show in the encore were the two big hits that were a MUST for the concert: I Want It That Way and Backstreet’s Back (Alright)! So much fun and such a great group of friends to dance along to the concert with.
The biggest difference, I felt, between being in the lawn section for both the Bruno Mars concert and this one was the vibe of the crowd. It was pretty frustrating and aggravating for the most part during the BM concert, lots of snottiness and attitude going around. BSB? Nothing but fun. Everyone was there to have a good time, relive their nostalgic teenage years.
It was one big, fun, singalong dance party – and it was AWESOME.
