Well, here we are. The season finale. Thank you to all of you who have enjoyed my spoilery, nickname-filled recap/reaction posts. It definitely got a bit tricky to follow as this season went along and I probably won’t be continuing this with the second season.. HOWEVER.. after watching the premiere of Sleepy Hollow (and my proper recap can be found over on Paper Droids in the next few days), I think I’ll continue my reactions posts with this new show!
OK. Final season 1 episode… the monarch butterfly emerges from the cocoon in the mini dome and flies around while hitting the edges of the dome, darkening it. It falls and lays down still while the sky in Chester’s Mill is also darkening in the same way. Human Edward Cullen is at the edge of the dome, crying out to it to explain why he needs to kill his father.
Pushy Journalist Julia wakens and insists on getting up and out to clear Cool Bad Boy’s name. Like I said last week, she DOES realize that Angie’s got a police radio right…? You can easily get at LEAST Kickass Linda to hear you. Kickass Linda is even using it to tell everyone about the Mini Dome!! C’mon PJJ! KL insists on touching the Mini Dome and rather than stop her, they all let her even though they knew Female DJ and got zapped.
HEC made such a stink about not calling him “Junior” anymore but that’s all anyone has been calling him the entire time. And once again, making use of the RADIO that Angie has. HEC suggests using that to find her. Has it still really not occurred to anyone to use that to clear CBB’s name? And speaking of CBB, he’s pretty much Kickass Bad Boy now too. Handcuffed and still fightin’ like a bad ass after Angie and PJJ break him out of the jail.
“That’s enough, lovebirds. It’s go time.”
Ah, that’s why. PJJ wanted to make the dramatic declaration to clear CBB’s name to HEC. The Fab Four put their hands on the dome and it shatters, the butterfly comes back to life and flies around circling CBB. Brilliant Brother, all proud of himself, declares “I knew it. You’re the monarch.” The egg starts glowing and shaking as if it’s going to explode, their surroundings all start shaking until PJJ goes to pick up the egg. Everything quiets and the butterfly starts flying to her and lands on the egg she’s now holding. Ever the astute one, CBB says “She’s the monarch.”
The townspeople are all gathering at the church for prayer, believing that the darkening of the sky means that the events in the Book of Revelations is coming to pass. Big Jim and Kickass Linda overhear on the radio that they’re meeting up with Angie. KL finds the barn and all the marked stars on the walls, as well as the line “The pink stars are falling in line” written on the wall. Big Jim shows KL the painting his wife had done.
“If your wife saw the dome coming, that means your family’s important. That means you’re important.”
HEC is angry that PJJ is “telling lies” about his dad and points his gun at her, demanding her to hand over the egg. Instead, she tosses it to Angie and everyone makes a run for it. DUDE. You are kickass but you’re handcuffed! Very noble to knock HEC over so the others can escape but you’re not gonna win this fight when you can’t use your hands! Moody Teen asks the egg what to do and Mom #2 appears before them, only it isn’t actually Mom #2. It’s “whoever sent the dome” taking on an appearance that would be familiar to them. She tells them that they must protect the egg for the darkness to go away and if they fail, they’re done.
“The dome wasn’t sent to punish you. It was sent to protect you. You’ll see.. in time.”
HEC goes to Big Jim and tells him that they want to assassinate him. Big Jim tells HEC that he saw the paintings and now believes this is his/their destiny. He fesses up to his son that he has taken lives, but none that weren’t necessary for the good of the town. Ah, such a family of delusional psychos.
PJJ and 3 of the Fab Four come to the conclusion that they can’t protect the egg/town AND save CBB at the same time so they have to choose. The time draws nearer for CBB’s hanging. Gee, they built the gallows incredibly fast there.. The noose goes around CBB’s neck and just as HEC is about to pull the lever, PJJ drops the egg into the water. Oh WOW. The pink stars flying upwards in straight lines.. what gorgeous imagery! The pink stars meet at the top of the dome bringing down the darkness and lighting up Chester’s Mill to a blindingly bright lightness. Big Jim is hollering for HEC to “DO IT NOW!” (pull the lever) annnnnnnd that’s how it ends.
Huh. Well, it’s a tad exciting I guess.. but was kinda expecting a bit more of a cliffhanger for a season finale.. And that’s that. Will you watch the next season? Thank you again for joining me for season 1 of Under the Dome and I’m definitely going to get around to reading the actual book some time soon to see how much it differs! 🙂
