I can’t believe how quickly time flies. It doesn’t feel like a year has already gone by since the last Ontario blogger meet-up when this one has come and gone again already. We had such a great time last year at the Watermark Irish Pub in downtown Toronto that we decided to hold it there again this year. The staff, the food and the location were all perfect for this setting.
The organizing committee of Wendy (@_CupcakeQueen_), Christa (More Than Just Magic), Nicole (Nicole About Town), Angel (Mermaid Vision Books), Liz (Midnight Bloom Reads) and myself had some learnings from last year that we wanted to implement for this year. We had more streamlined delegated tasks for each of us depending on our busy schedules leading up to the event. Knowing that book bloggers are punctual if not often early, we showed up earlier this year to set up so we would be sure that we were good to go once people started showing up 30-40 min early for a 1pm official start. We had a more manageable gift bag for all attendees, and put them all on the chairs beforehand so we didn’t have a traffic jam at the check in desk. The trivia was also done in a better format with sheets on each seat to fill out rather than trying to yell out to small groups of tables. And even when we showed up to the restaurant, we saw that the staff had set up the tables in a more efficient set-up with banquet style rather than last year’s individually separated tables. This way was much more conducive to conversation among bloggers. While it may be small tweaks, I think this worked overall for quite a relaxed meet & greet.
Shortly after 1:30pm, Nicole got everyone’s attention to do some welcome and introductions. We were honoured to have authors Gail Gallant (author of Apparition) and Teresa Toten (author of The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B) join us as well as Kaiti & Suman from Harper Collins, Pam from Random House, Dan from Raincoast, Jim from Dundurn Press and Kellie from Spencer Hill Press. I also loved that we could use this meet-up to support fellow bloggers’ endeavours from Kaley (Books, etc.) talking about her Book Buzz event to the pre-launch party debut of the first issue of Inaccurate Realities!
It was great to see new and familiar faces alike and once food orders were taken and food was being served, it was already past 3pm and time for the trivia/raffle/prizes to be given out. As it was last year, the time simply flew on by and even though we had just shy of 70 people in attendance, there were still people that we all didn’t get a chance to say hello to. It’s always nice to see a book swap organized beforehand so everyone was coming in with rolling suitcases filled with books to give away and others to take home.
Thank you to everyone who came out this year, from the publishers, authors and bloggers alike. Thank you to Andrea (Cozy Up With a Good Read), Sara (Geek Girl’s Book Blog) and Hayley (Booking It With Hayley G) for coming by earlier to help us set up. A huge thanks to the staff at the Watermark Irish Pub for once again taking such great care of us.
