Alice in Tumblr-land is a collection of short fairy tales that are retold in a modern day setting. From Cinderella to the Tortoise & the Hare, Snow White to the Ugly Duckling, this collection of stories pokes some fun at the blend of well known childhood stories with the social media world of today. The stories are short and jump to different characters frequently, where one character’s story would be told in numerous parts that are spread out throughout the book.
The idea for this was intriguing and I love a good pop culture kind of retelling but unfortunately it really fell flat for me. I generally love retellings but this one had such a strange attempt at humour and it ended up just not being very funny to me. I recognized the attempts at being funny, but the wry “wit” did not hold up to sustain any interest on my part. I had read this fairly short book in one sitting while on the plane and even elicited an incredulous “what are you reading!?” from my seat neighbour once she saw some of the bizarre illustrations accompanying the stories.
I have seen some great response on this book from other readers’ reviews but this unfortunately was not for me, to my great dismay.
