Last Monday, Indigo Yorkdale welcomed back Marissa Meyer to Toronto promoting the release of the third book in her Lunar Chronicles series, Cress. It was almost exactly a year ago that the charming author was in town to promote Scarlet – how quickly a year flies by. While last year’s crowd was predictably big, especially it being on a Saturday afternoon, many of us thought it would be a more manageable crowd with this weeknight event. How surprised we were when we show up after work and there was already a line snaking around the railing on the upper floor of Indigo! Showing up about 1.5 hrs before the event and I was already #49 in line.
The best thing about this numbering system was that it allowed us to walk around and mingle, as the numbers were the order for book signings. Many of us knew we wouldn’t be getting one of the selected seats so it gave us a great opportunity to catch up while waiting in line – and enjoying the author appearance from afar. A fun photo op that Indigo coordinated was the lovely Natalie dressed up as Cress for fans to take pictures with her. She looked awesome!
Marissa came out to much enthusiasm and applause from the audience as she regaled everyone with the process of her becoming a writer and penning the Lunar Chronicles, as well as the inspiration (Sailor Moon!) and journey of writing the series and writing in general. To be honest, I didn’t mind that we were further back as it allowed for a lot of the new fans to get up close since many of us bloggers were at her signing last year. (Wendy managed to snag a seat so I asked to use some of her closer-up photos. Thanks Wendy!)
It was during the Q&A session afterwards that we learned of some exciting news, like the fact that Cinder had been optioned for a movie and a script exists! The best part that Marissa is looking forward to with a movie possibility? The action figures! As for casting, she laughs “anyone but Kristen Stewart…” She is currently still writing Winter, and also has an Alice in Wonderland standalone YA fantasy prequel coming out in Fall 2015 entitled Heartless. I can’t wait for that one! When asked if she has read any Lunar Chronicles fanfics, she said she had read one the day she found out they existed (after shouting for joy) but hasn’t read any since. She felt it would be too weird for the author(s) to know she’s reading it, and she didn’t want it influencing her own story since she is currently still writing Winter, the final book in the series.

The numbered book signing worked out well and the line went relatively quickly given how many people were in attendance. Thanks to the staff at Indigo Yorkdale, the awesome Raincoast Books team and, of course, Marissa Meyer!
