Earlier this week, I was honoured to attend Showcase’s preview screening of the new television series Outlander, based on the historical fiction novel by Diana Gabaldon. While the show has already premiered in the States, Outlander is set to hit Canadian airwaves this Sunday, August 24th at 10pm on Showcase and Shaw Media certainly put on a fantastic themed preview party!
After meeting up with Christa, and subsequently bumping into Liz, the three of us headed to The Caledonia – a Scottish pub in Toronto’s Ossington neighbourhood, complete with a man in a kilt playing bagpipes greeting us at the door. Once inside, we were ushered over to try the signature cocktails – either the Outlander (Hendricks Scottish Gin, sweet vermouth, campari & cucumber) or Jacobite (Ginger wine, scotch & fresh lime) – and take photos with the handsome shirtless men in kilts. Between the Scottish food floating around and the whisky tasting in the back room, we felt completely immersed and ready for the Outlander screening.
Outlander follows Claire, a combat nurse in 1945, on her second honeymoon with her husband Frank when she suddenly & mysteriously finds herself in 1743 Scotland. She’s thrown into a dangerous world where she is forced to marry Jamie, a young Scottish warrior.
The guests were about split in half on those who had read the books and those who haven’t yet. I’m in the latter group and while I have had this book recommended to me by many people, I hadn’t gotten around to it. I honestly had no idea this historical fiction book had a sci-fi, time-traveling twist to it and I really liked it! The costumes and cinematography are beautiful & grand, making it feel like a film rather than a television show. There is a passionate chemistry between Claire and the two men in her dual-lives with one particular scene early on that caused Lindsey and I to comment cheekily, “Nope, definitely not a show for kids.”
Thank you to the staff at The Caledonia and the team at Shaw Media for a wonderful event to get us all excited for a sure-to-be hit show!
