Picking up a few months after where the first book, I Hunt Killers, leaves off Jasper Dent finds himself in New York City with his girlfriend when a NY detective comes seeking his help. The bustling city is being terrorized by the Hat-Dog killer and Jasper is in demand to help the police force make sense of the game that the killer is playing.
After my rave review of the first book, I don’t even know what to write in this one that’s a) different and b) not spoiling anything! Game is such a page-turning sequel that kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Lyga lays out the twists and turns, dropping hints and red herrings along the way so well that it’s as if he’s playing a game with all us readers as well. I loved seeing how Lyga develops the characters, especially Jazz, as he wrestles with a twisted version of nature vs nurture – which, in his case could very well be somewhat of the same thing.
I initially thought I figured out the “game” and felt a bit disappointed that it was what I thought, only to be so completely and pleasantly surprised with the revelation that it wasn’t. I have a horrible habit of over-thinking and guessing where it’s going, despite my hatred for spoilers. It’s always a bit disappointing and self-loathing when I do end up figuring it out and part of why I’m a huge fan of Lyga’s now is that he always keeps me guessing with his narrative. Each shocking moment had its intended effect with me.
Game continues on with the twisted, disturbed and graphic storytelling that was first introduced in I Hunt Killers and, once again, I’m a bit surprised this series falls under the “young adult” category considering the violence and imagery presented at times. It didn’t bother me, but I can see how it might startle some readers. This sequel truly leaves the reader hanging right to the very end. I’m just glad that the third book, Blood of My Blood, was already out when I got hooked on this series!
I’d love to screencap the texts I’ve been sending Ardo but it would be way too spoilery. 😉
