Pearl has been a flight attendant for almost 2 decades and she recounts some of the ridiculous and irritating experiences she’s had in those years of flying. Everything from crew behaviour to passenger hijinx.
I was very curious to read this one, having traveled quite a bit this year. I wanted to see what kind of stuff bothers flight attendants – and boy are there are a lot of things that bother this author. Admittedly, it’s a very no-holds-barred recounting of her many annoying experiences but while it was an entertaining, quick read it also felt like it became too ranty. I definitely did laugh and gasp in horror at many of her stories but at some point they started feeling too bitter and mean. I’m also not sure if it was fully edited as the flow seemed to be all over the place. Some of the rants felt very stream-of-consciousness kind of writing interspersed with constant out of context comments and stories about how pretty/highly-regarded/smart everyone thinks she is.
Of course, all of us have probably at one time or another joked that we could write a book about all the craziness that we encounter every day in our jobs but Pearl has actually done it. Of course, she’s careful about not naming the airline she is currently employed with and her stories imply that many of the scenarios (and her reactions) are the norm among flight attendants which I would like to think (and hope) that’s not the case. I’m sure everyone has their bad days but this book felt a lot like a jaded rambling bitchfest of everything that she’s ever encountered. I almost think this may have been better as a blog.
All that being said, I did find some of the stories amusing – until I didn’t. I think with all the bitter ranting that’s in these pages that more humility could have been shown. She claims she loves her job but judging by the way she speaks of the people around her, and the title of this book itself, it’s a bit hard to believe she actually does.
