Mindy Kaling returns with her second book, collecting more of her essays that are infused with her personality & insight. She discusses everything from Hollywood’s obsession with looks to her “weird as hell” relationship with B.J. Novak. Full of hilarious anecdotes, Why Not Me? takes a tongue-in-cheek look at everyday (and some not-so-everyday) anxieties and experiences.
The follow-up to Kaling’s best selling first book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? comes highly anticipated and she brings her signature humour to the table once again. I loved reading her candid, oft-honest opinions on various subjects interlaced with her cheeky sarcasm. For those that aren’t familiar with Ms Kaling, they might not realize she’s joking in some of the more direct statements.
While I appreciated that she wanted to take this opportunity to address some unpleasant experiences she has had with those of questionable manners, I felt at times it seemed a bit more like airing grievances. I adore Mindy and The Mindy Project, but there were more than a few moments that left me uncomfortable with the direction that was taken – but that’s just me, and it wasn’t my tough decisions to make.
What I probably most enjoyed reading about in Why Not Me? was a peek into the real Mindy Kaling. Compared to other celebrities, Mindy is relatively private with her personal life so I liked that, on her own turf, she shared some stories with her readers. For me, it allowed a chance for her fans to see a glimpse of the actual woman behind the Office and Mindy Project characters. A fun and entertaining read!
