Based on the best-selling books by Lev Grossman, The Magicians debuts on Showcase this Monday, January 25th, with a two-episode premiere. Starting at 9pm EST, the Vancouver-filmed television series follows Quentin, a grad student played by Jason Ralph, as he is chosen to attend a secret university in upstate New York. While at Brakebills, he and his friends realize that the world of magic that they thought to be fantasy is actually a reality, and that this modern day sorcery is not what they expected it would be.
Joining Jason Ralph are Stella Maeve (Julia), Olivia Taylor Dudley – aka Reese Witherspoon’s doppelgänger (Alice), Hale Appleman (Eliot), Arjun Gupta (Penny), and Summer Bishil (Margo). With the first episode already available online, I absolutely watched it already and I must say that it’s very dark and sexy. The story is intriguing, and with a secretive school and very attractive cast, it reminds me of a mix of Gossip Girl, Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia, and X-Men.
